GleeJ 2011

For the 2011 ARML (American Regions Mathematics League) competition, a friend of mine (Sam Sohn) decided to start a “Glee club” to sing at the annual ARML singing contest. A few of my friends and I decided it would be kind of fun, so we set out to create a mashup of lyrics and work out some choreography. Our team name, GleeJ, came about as a mix of our school’s name “TJ” and the fact that we were sort of a “Glee Club.”

Here are the lyrics we ended up using:

Airplanes – 1:30
[Chorus 1]
Why do all the circles
On my paper
Look like triangles
I could really use some sleep right now (sleep right now) (sleep right now)
Why do all the circles
On my paper
Look like triangles
I could really use some sleep right now (sleep right now) (sleep right now)

[Verse 1]
Yeah
I could use a pencil, or a pen, or protractor
To go back to a problem that I knew how to factor
Cause after all the algebraic coordinate bashing
And all the arcs and the sines and the fractions
And all the drawings and tedious subtraction
There comes a time when you lose all your passion
And when you’re staring at that problem on your desk
and you’re hoping that this theorem isn’t on the test
But that’s just how the morning will run
You get another one soon after you’re done
And when your brain unravels, and they askin’
for the integral of the Arcsecant
So circle, circle, sorry this stinks
I’m off to bed, too tired to think
If sleep don’t come, I’ll turn on the light
And I’ll be right back at it by the end of the night

[Chorus]
Why do all the circles
On my paper
Look like triangles
I could really use some sleep right now (sleep right now) (sleep right now)
Why do all the circles
On my paper
Look like triangles
I could really use some sleep right now (sleep right now) (sleep right now)

Grenade – 1:08
Pi and e, QED,
That’s just how we roll, try to
Learn, learn, learn it all
But it never ends
Should have known math was trouble from the first problem,
But I don’t know the answer
What is the answer?
Wrote down all I had
But it didn’t help a bit
It didn’t help a bit, at all
To find success at ARML is all I ever asked,
Cause what you don’t understand is
that I’d integrate for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’d divide and equate for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I would differentiate for ya (yeah, yeah , yeah)
You know I’d go to Penn State for ya (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, oh
I would go through all this pain,
Compute a fifth power in my brain, (btw, Adam, is 17^5 1419857? YES!!! I did it in my head lol)
Yes, I would die for ya ARML;
But you won’t do the same

DJ Got Us Falling in Love Again – 1:12
TJ (yeah man)
So we’re against Lehigh
We’ve got lots of formulae to derive (to derive)
Thank God it’s Friday now
It’s like I’ve forgotten how to divide (to divide)
Hands off, when the problem’s read, we gotta have our hands off
Question’s read, grab the pencil
Ain’t I seen this before?
I think I remember those sines, sines, sines, sines
Cause baby tonight, ARML got us doing the math again
Yeah, baby tonight, ARML got us doing the math again
So solve, solve, like it’s the end, end, end of the world, world,
Gonna get the gold
Cause baby tonight, ARML got us doing the math again

Here’s the accompanying audio for the song:
GleeJ Mashup

Finally, here’s a video of our performance. I’m the second one on the left.

Now, this was actually a competition, so the performances were ranked. Out of 19 or so teams, we ended up getting 2nd place! Not too bad for first timers!
Of course, as our song suggests, Lehigh got 1st place… oh well.

Overall, it was a lot of fun, and I look forward to doing it next year, too.
